Seminar: Self-improvement in Debate

Wednesday April 17th 7:00 p.m. EST Seminar: Self-improvement in Debate Presenter: Jason Xiao (Team Canada Coach, 2020 WUDC Champion) Jason’s seminar is going to focus on a few underemphasized parts of debating. He'll talk about self-improvement in debate, mental game and attitude to maximize competitive success and enjoyment, and common mistakes made in the Canadian debating circuit. All of these suggestions and tips will be useful for debaters of all experience levels. On top of that, Jason will also talk about how debaters can get better at World Schools style and what sort of tournaments should be attended for growth and experience. Jason’s bio: Jason Xiao is a recent law graduate from the University of Oxford who is now converting his law degree to be eligible to practice in Canada. Originally hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Jason's participation in debate has opened up doors for him and resulted in great successes. As a debater, Jason debated for the Canadian national team in high school where he made the grand finals of the World Schools Debating Championships, and at the World Universities Debating Championships, Jason and his teammate beat out over 700 other debaters to become the World Champions. In addition, Jason has coached the Canadian national debate team to winning the World Schools Debating Championships in 2020. This event will be a fundraiser for the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association, a not-for-profit organisation in charge of Saskatchewan debate. As a province, Saskatchewan faces financial and geographical barriers to competing in debate. SEDA is responsible for running all debating events in the province and has been pivotal to making debate accessible to thousands of youth over the years.
